Wireless tethering lets you connect your camera to a phone, tablet, or computer so you can control your camera and work with your photos from another device without being physically connected by a cable. It can make photography more convenient, give you a larger view of your images, and provide access to camera controls that may be difficult to use directly on the camera.

With CamRanger, you can wirelessly control a compatible camera, view images as you shoot, and use your mobile device or computer as a remote photography workstation.

What is tethering?

Tethering is the process of connecting a camera to another device, such as a computer, tablet, or smartphone. Depending on the equipment and software being used, tethering can let you control camera settings, trigger the shutter remotely, and view or transfer images as they are captured. You can still physically control and shoot with the camera while tethered depending on your desired workflow.

Traditionally, tethering has required using a USB cable to connect the camera to a computer. Wireless tethering provides similar capabilities without literally tethering you to your computer. This gives you more freedom to move around and position your camera where you need it. Wireless tethering is also typically easier to use mobile devices like an iPhone, iPad, or Android.

Why would I want to wirelessly tether my camera?

Wireless tethering can be useful in many types of photography, from studio and product photography to landscapes, wildlife, and portraits. Some common benefits include:

Remote camera control: Adjust camera settings and trigger the shutter from your phone, tablet, or computer instead of repeatedly returning to the camera.

A larger viewing screen: Review your images on a larger display, making it easier to evaluate composition, focus, and detail.

Immediate image review: See your photos on your connected device as you shoot, helping you identify problems and make adjustments before taking more pictures.

More flexible camera placement: Position your camera in locations that are inconvenient to reach, while keeping your control device somewhere more accessible.

A more efficient workflow: Spend less time moving between the camera and your viewing position, particularly when making repeated adjustments or working with a subject.

The usefulness of wireless tethering depends on your photography. It can be especially valuable when precise camera placement, remote operation, or close inspection of images is important.

How can I control my camera with my iPad, iPhone, Android device, or computer?

There are two common approaches to wireless camera control: using the camera’s built-in wireless features or using a separate device such as CamRanger.

Using CamRanger

CamRanger connects to a compatible camera through USB and creates its own Wi-Fi network. You connect your supported phone, tablet, or computer to that network and use the CamRanger software to control the camera and work with images.

The available controls and features depend on your camera model and the device you use. Before choosing a system, check the list of supported cameras.

Using your camera’s built-in Wi-Fi

Some cameras have built-in Wi-Fi and offer a companion app for remote control or image transfer. This can be a convenient option if your camera supports the functions you need.

However, built-in wireless capabilities vary by camera model. The available controls, image-transfer performance, connection behavior, and overall workflow may differ from a dedicated tethering solution.

For a more detailed comparison, see CamRanger vs. in-camera Wi-Fi.

Do I need to be connected to the Internet to use CamRanger?

No. CamRanger creates its own Wi-Fi network for communication between the CamRanger device and your phone, tablet, or computer. You can use it without an Internet connection, including when photographing outdoors or in locations without Wi-Fi access.

The Wi-Fi connection is used to communicate with the camera and transfer information to your connected device; it does not need to provide Internet access.

Though if you do need Internet access at the same time, that is possible, as described in our article about bridging the CamRanger into an existing WiFi network.

Can I see my photos as I take them?

Yes, the CamRanger lets you view images on your connected phone, tablet, or computer as you shoot. This can make it easier to check composition, focus, exposure, and other details without having to look at the camera’s built-in screen.

This can be particularly useful when collaborating with others. Being able to immediately show large images to clients, assistants, or directors can greatly improve the efficiency of your shoots.

How hard is it to set up and use CamRanger?

CamRanger is designed to provide wireless camera control without requiring you to configure a conventional Wi-Fi network. In general, you connect CamRanger to your compatible camera, power it on, connect your phone, tablet, or computer to the CamRanger Wi-Fi network, and open the appropriate CamRanger software.

Some cameras do require a setting change or two. Canon and Nikon cameras usually don’t require any changes, while Fujifilm and Sony cameras typically do require menu changes. These settings are covered within our camera setup pages.

Does wireless tethering work with my camera?

Compatibility depends on your camera model and the wireless tethering solution you choose. Even when a camera is supported, the specific controls and features available can vary.

Before purchasing CamRanger, check the supported camera list to confirm compatibility with your camera.

Getting started with wireless tethering

Wireless tethering can give you greater control over your camera, make reviewing images easier, and help streamline your photography workflow. Whether you are photographing in a studio or working in the field, it provides another way to interact with your camera without needing to stand beside it.
